2023 UEA Graduation

As you all probably already know, I am an Actress. Well, at least that’s the fun, exciting, passion of mine that is also disgustingly unrealistic. I also graduated from The University of East Anglia last July and have officially moved out of Naaaarwich.

Here I shall be doing weekly professional and personal check ins, regarding career steps and mental health questions.

So here weeee gooooo

The reason I keep pushing such dignified pictures of me right into your laps, is because maybe the more I get done, the more I think Kelly Valentine Hendry, Bridgerton’s casting director, will think I’m so Featherington that I’ll just have to be in season four. Though sadly it doesn’t tend to work like that.

There was a lot of dread and anticipation graduating from uni, as one part of you thinks everything will just work out and a job in London will open their arms to you immediately. Then the other part, that thinks your life really did end at 17. It’s a balance of being hopeful, yet not too optimistic. Being encouraging, but staying pragmatic. A seesaw of, it could, but it could not. And that is still the situation I’m immersed in.

As an Actor, you really can’t compare to your friends who work in insurance, or fitness. But the notion of them doing what they want to do, pretty soon after graduation, is a notion that stings. The one thing I want to be doing every day, will repeatedly be in the hands of casting directors, who may just like the word, no.

That is why I’m using my drama degree and everything else we got taught, bar acting, to secure a job I will love. And that is where I’m currently at. Dabbling in all things media. Very linkedIn familiar.

I did in fact have an acting job in the running, but that recently broke down and as much as it was, to put it lightly, soul destroying, it also made me realise how much I was counting on something, so far out of reach. I felt vulnerable and defenceless. I don’t want to wait for someone to press a golden buzzer, I want to be able to press it myself. This isn’t me saying I have everything under control and that I even know my future plans. It’s what you call, layering up to face the merciless job market. If I’m going to get sucker punched by overdogs, I choose how it affects me.

You name it. Running my 10k plan, charity shopping, CV perfecting, email spamming. The few things this week that has boosted my mood tremendously. I still and will carry on getting a wash of melancholy, but I know I am being proactive and frankly, it’s that which promotes success.

Thank you for reading my weekly check in, where you’ll read all things sincere x
